Rotarian
Divers Generous as Ever
Every year,
the IFRSD
gathers for a dive trip that takes us to a different and unique part of
the world. It is tradition for us to contact a Rotary club in the
town/village we will be visiting to arrange for our fellowship to
present dollars to a needy project for their community.
Some of the
things we have done in the past are contribute dollars for computer
equipment for an elementary school in San Cristobal, Equador; a marine
project in Belize; badly needed swing sets for the children in
Puntarenas, Costa Rica; and the Nacamaki Medical Project on the Island
of Koro in the Fiji Islands.
The Island of
Koro is a small island, several hours by boat from Sava, the capital
of Fiji. While diving in the Fiji Islands, it was brought to the
attention of Thomas Hosey and Mary Ann Leone of the tremendous need
for a medical clinic on this island servicing nine surrounding
villages comprised of approximately 900 people.
The government
has told the village that the current clinic, a two room tin building,
does not meet its current health standards. None of the houses in the
village have running water nor does the clinic. The current clinic
does not have electricity. If the villagers do not replace the clinic,
the government has stated it will discontinue its support. We have
contacted the Health Department and have been told if we could raise
the money, US $6,000, a new medical facility could be built.
We are happy to
report that because of the generous support of Rotary Clubs and
personal contributions of our dive fellowship, we have raised $6,000
for the project. The following have made contributions toward our
project.
Richard Love,
Rotarian - personnally - $500
Uwe Shultz, Lahaina Rotary, Hawaii - $500
Maureen Smitt - Rotarian - personally - $250 plus the Fort Myers
Rotary, Florida - $250
Dan Lockwood of St. Clair Rotary, Michigan -$500
Mary Ann Leone & Thomas Hosey of Mt. Clemens Rotary, Michigan
$1,000
Sam Forbes of Denver Rotary, Colorado $1,000
Members of the IFRSD on the Sixth Expedition to Fiji - $1,500
Rob Stroud of Madison Rotary, Wisconsin $500
Thank you
everyone for your generosity for you have touched the lives of many.
